2024.11 Lake-Yamanaka Yamanashi

At Lake Yamanaka, an experiment unfolds: the creation of a spiraling helix of ice and time.
The crystal echoes resonate across the tranquil shore.

The Preparatory Journey to Lake Kussharo

I decided to try carving the Jikū Ranentai from ice.

Ice holds a powerful allure that combines both awe and beauty. I had a strong sense that ice resonated deeply with my inner self and would bring about a new awareness.

Before undertaking a full-scale creation using natural ice at Lake Kussharo during the harsh midwinter,I conducted a trial carving session at Lake Yamanaka to address various challenges related to tools, equipment, and environmental conditions.

Carving Ice Outdoors

Under a deep blue sky, with wind rushing past and dazzling sunlight overhead,
I carved into ice—and in doing so, confronted the shape of my inner self.

It brought a sensation entirely unlike that of working in a studio,
where I’m surrounded by machine noise and swirling dust.

The movement of drifting clouds and the ever-shifting angle of the sun
inevitably stirred the rhythm within my body.
Impulse, beyond any deliberate intention, took hold of my movements.

The transparent ice, like a lens, revealed the core of my existence—
a part of me long tucked away in the depths of my being.
